Dear Alberto and Antonella,
Not a day passes that we don’t think back on our week at Villa Paterno. What a beautiful location and wonderful, wonderful house! From the moment we stepped into the cool darkness of the foyer and started up the staircase, we knew we were in a very special place. To then walk out onto the patio and catch first sight of the rolling vineyards and olive groves, were knew we were only a few steps from heaven. If the magnificent location and house were not enough, we then discovered that our hosts themselves were the very best part of the package. Such hospitality! Such thoughtful kindness! While we had heard that Italian hospitality was wonderful, we were not prepared for the way you welcomed our family. Surely nowhere else are six strangers invited to share the owners’ table on the night they arrive. Antonella and you spoiled us with that first classic dinner. We had no finer meal during our entire visit.
To find the kitchen and refrigerator stocked with everything we would need for the first few days was completely unexpected and amazing. To then learn that the wine and olive oil were from the very vines and trees in the yard below - and that we were invited to help ourselves! - was incredible. Your generosity made it possible for us to give almost no thought to shopping, focusing instead on unwinding and adjusting to a lovely slower pace of life.
Alberto, your generosity began long before we arrived with opening the pool for us. The blue-green water was the crowning touch to the view for us. As we think back over our week in Paterno, there wasn ‘t a day when you two did not have a hand in making it an unforgettable visit….walking around your beautiful grounds, rides through the countryside, introductions, horseback rides, visits over good Italian cooking. Surely no other host has ever presented glorious flowers to a visiting mother on Mother’s Day! I will never forget that lovely gesture. So, we are back in our real world, of course, working at our respective jobs, taking care of our own homes, busy with family, friends and colleagues. But because of you and our week at Villa Paterno we are not the same people we were when we left the US. We are far richer for the experience, with memories that will stay with us forever. In the midst of a stressful day someone will ask, “Did you enjoy Italy?” and we are back Paterno. We see the view, feel the tile under bare feet, smell herbs cooking in the kitchen, and hear Antonella calling out across the yard, “Alberrrrto!” - such a lovely sound.
